Baghdatis to face Croat Ljubicic in Australian Open quarterfinals
Nicosia, Jan 23 (CNA)-- Cypriot tennis player, 20-year-old Markos Baghdatis and former World Junior Champion will face Croat Ivan Ljubicic, No 8 in the world ranking for the quarter-final of the Australian Open.
The Cypriot player defeated Ljibicic in last year's Australian Open second round with 3-1.
Baghdatis knocked out American Andy Roddick in a 3-1 surprise victory on Sunday, securing a ticket to the quarter-finals, while Ljubicic defeated Thomas Johanson.
According to ATP, the Official Men's professional tennis site, says that ''Baghdatis produced the best performance of this young career to stun No. 2 Andy Roddick and reach his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final in Melbourne.''
Australian Open's website remarks that ''Baghdatis showed he is far more than just a player with the loudest supporters.''
''Baghdatis's brilliant play, particularly his devastating cross-court forehand, proved the difference between the two players,'' it adds.
