Cypriot tennis player advances to the Australian Open semifinals
Nicosia, Jan 24 (CNA) -- Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis took a remarkable victory today over Croat no 8 in the world Ivan Ljubicic during an Australian Open quarterfinal match in Melbourne.
Baghdatis defeated Ljuibicic with 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 after 3,17 hours in a court almost full of Greek and Greek Cypriots living in Australia. ?n the next phase Baghdatis will play Argentina's David Nalbandian, the reigning Tennis Masters Cup champion and No 4 in the world ranking.
''This crowd around me just pumps up to go and play my best tennis,'' Baghdatis said after the match adding ''It was unbelievable; it was like a football match. For us players to have this emotion it is wonderful.''
Baghdatis appeared cautious as regards his next test against Nalbandian, whom he defeated in the Basel tennis tournament last November.
''I will just play my tennis, try not to make a lot of mistakes, to play the points, not to give easy points and go for the big shots at the best time.''
