EU bird flu experts begin work in Turkish occupied areas
Nicosia, Jan 30 (CNA) – Two experts from the Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Unit of the European Union are starting work today in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, after the high pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 has been confirmed in a sample.
Head of Veterinary Services George Neofitou has told CNA that the work of the two experts aims at helping and pinning-down the deficiencies in preventing the virus. The experts will investigate the epidemiology of the disease on the ground, he added.
He also said their visit had been planned for sometime now but was speeded up because of the confirmation of the sample.
Neofitou explained that the two experts are sent by the EU and have nothing to do with the Cyprus government, although they will brief the government about their findings.
He called on people not to panic, noting that all necessary measures to protect the population are taken.
