WHO expert to visit Cyprus following bird flu cases in occupied areas
Nicosia, Jan 31 (CNA) - A World Health Organisation (WHO) high ranking official is arriving on the island to meet health and veterinary experts regarding avian influenza (bird flu).
A United Nations Development Programme press release said that UNDP Action for Cooperation and Trust will be hosting Dr. Guenael Rodier, Special Adviser for Communicable Disease to the Regional Director, WHO Regional Office for Europe.
It said the purpose of his visit is to exchange technical information with the relevant health and veterinary experts in Cyprus regarding avian influenza.
Dr. Rodier will give a press conference at Ledra Palace on Wednesday afternoon in relation to his visit.
Two German specialists are already on the island as European Commission envoys to draft a report on avian influenza in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, Dr. J. Lohr and Dr. ?. Greiner, will remain on the island until Wednesday afternoon. The EU experts visited the Turkish occupied areas after two cases of the virus were detected there.
Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has assured that all necessary measures for the protection of the government-controlled areas from avian influenza are being taken and has stressed that there is no reason for concern.
