G8 calls for intensification of effort for agreement in Cyprus

By Apostolis Zoupaniotis-- New York, Jun 14 (CNA) -- The Foreign Ministers of the Group of Eight (G8) have called for the intensification of efforts to reach a settlement in the Cyprus peace effort and bridge the remaining obstacles.

Foreign Ministers also said, in their communique after a meeting in Whistler (Canada), the UN should play a full role in facilitating the effort for an agreement.|

"G8 Foreign Ministers welcomed the resumption of talks aimed at achieving a just, viable and comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem," they said.

They "urged the two Cypriot leaders, and all others concerned, to intensify the effort to reach agreement and to bridge the remaining obstacles towards a lasting settlement."

"We welcomed the United Nations Secretary General's recent visit to Cyprus and endorsed his hope that an agreement could be reached soon and that the United Nations should play a full role in facilitating this objective," they concluded.
