Tennis star Baghdatis to be honored by Cyprus officials
Nicosia, Feb 1 - Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis will return home on Saturday and will be honored by the state for his unprecedented performance at the Australian Open last week.
Baghdatis played the world's number one seeded Swiss Roger Federer in the final and lost but still managed to raise the spirit of Cypriots all over the world.
Sources in Nicosia said there will be an official welcoming ceremony at the airport by the Cyprus government, in the presence of Education and Culture Minister Pefkios Georgiades, the Cyprus Sports Organization, Cyprus Olympic Committee, his family and scores of people.
The Cyprus Tennis Federation will also honor the Cypriot tennis player during a ceremony at the National Tennis Centre in Nicosia.
Baghdatis, who now ranks 27th worldwide, will leave Cyprus on Monday to begin training for his next tennis tournament.
