United Nations, Feb 10 (CNA) -- US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack has reiterated US support to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.
Asked during the daily briefing to comment on British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw’s statements that the Greek Cypriot government is seeking to marginalize the Turkish Cypriot community, McCormack noted he was not aware of the remarks and added: “we support Secretary-General Annan's efforts to find a solution. I think what is required is less acrimony in exchange of acrimonious remarks and more understanding, and working towards serious work towards a possible solution”.
Invited to comment the position of the Cyprus government that since Straw identifies fully with the Turkish position, Britain cannot be objective, and asked how this affects the cooperation of the US with Britain on Cyprus, State Department spokesman said “I am not sure I would agree with that interpretation”.
