US Congress members welcome outcome of Papadopoulos-Annan meeting
Nicosia, Mar 3 (CNA) -- US Congress members Michael Bilirakis and Carolyn Maloney have welcomed the agreement reached during a meeting between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and UN Secretary-General Kofi Anan, in Paris, the two communities in Cyprus to begin bicommunal discussions on a series of issues at the technical level.
''We applaud President Papadopoulos' meeting with the Secretary-General Annan'', the two Congress members said in a letter to the Congress members.
''Where prior reunification efforts have failed, today we have a new opportunity for success, because of the growing and important ties have already been established between the two communities of Cyprus and because of the common EU perspective,'' they added.
In their letter, Bilirakis and Maloney also recalled that the Cypriot government has successfully worked to release 139 million Euros in EU economic aid for the Turkish Cypriots, as well as the fact that 10,000 Turkish Cypriots are employed in the government-controlled areas of Cyprus.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded the island occupying its northern third.
