US will not recognize illegal regime in occupied Cyprus
Nicosia, Mar 20 – Washington has given Nicosia firm assurances that it will not, under any circumstances, recognize the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus.
This is what Government Spokesman George Lillikas said in response to the letter by eight Senators to the US Secretary of State expressing their deep concern for the administration's plans to promote direct trade with the occupied north of Cyprus.
He also said that the US administration has said that they recognize only one government in the Republic of Cyprus, that of President Tassos Papadopoulos.
Mr. Lillikas also said there are American products as well as products from other countries in the market in the occupied areas.
“Direct trade, however, in the sense of direct flights to the occupied part of the island or docking of ships does not exist”, he added.
Mr. Lillikas also said “we have formal assurances from US administration officials that the US will not recognize, under any circumstances, the illegal regime. They also assure us that they recognize only one government in the Republic of Cyprus”.
