Seville, Jun 22 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides expressed here
today satisfaction with the paragraph referring to Cyprus in the conclusions of
the two-day European Council, held yesterday and today in Seville.
Kasoulides said that the 15 EU member states have briefed during today's lunch the applicant countries on the conclusions of the Summit and they underlined that the EU is determined to keep to the time table for enlargement.
The minister also said that the final decision as to which countries will be invited to join the EU will be made at the European Council in Copenhagen in six months' time.
This is particularly important for us since it is linked with the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, Kasoulides stated.
Cypriot FM said that according to the Seville conclusions the solution of the Cyprus issue has to be based on the principles on which the EU was founded.|
He noted the reference in the conclusions, which says that the EU believes that the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem should be concluded before the end of the accession negotiations, which are set to end in October this year.
The EU said in its conclusions that a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus should be consistent with relevant UN resolutions.
