Cypriot Communications Minister meets with EUROCONTROL Director General

Brussels, Mar 29 (CNA) – Bilateral and regional issues of air traffic were discussed here between Cypriot Minister of Communications and Transport Haris Thrasou and Director General of EUROCONTROL Victor Aguado.

Both sides have agreed that the technical support provided by EUROCONTROL for the upgrading of the air traffic control of Cyprus and especially harmonization with the safety regulations and the “Single European Sky” is moving towards the right direction and has important results.

The two officials also exchanged views as regards the issue of the safety of flights at the norther part of Cyprus' FIR. EUROCONTROL is fully aware of the situation and efforts take place at the technical and operational level to achieve the best possible progress in this field.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

As regards the next meeting of the Europe-Middle East Air Traffic Management Coordination (EMAC) Navigating Committee, in which Cyprus, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt participate, it was decided to take place in Brussels 23-24 May.

In the framework of Cyprus’ regional role, it was decided that a regional conference that will cover broadly the issue of security in civil aviation will take place in Nicosia. The conference will be organized by the Cypriot Ministry of Communication and Works with the support of EUROCONTROL, ICAO, EASA, ACI, IATA and Flight Safety Foundation and will be attended by representatives of EMAC members and of all Arab nations.
