Astromeritis-Zodhia crossing point to re-open
Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou said here Wednesday that UNFICYP will organise on Thursday a small event to celebrate the proper opening of the Astromeritis-Zodhia crossing point on Thursday.
UNFICYP announced today that road repairs between the Astromeritis-Zodhia crossing points are now complete and that ''following agreement by the two sides'' it will ''re-open effective 07:00 Thursday, 30 March, and will operate on a 24-hour basis.''
Speaking on his return from Khartoum, Sudan, where he attended the Arab League summit, Iacovou said the crossing point will operate on a 24-hour basis. The crossing point first opened in August 2005.
Iacovou reminded that the crossing point had been operating after the one-sided decision of the occupation forces while the Cypriot government had warned that the checkpoint was not ready and work was needed to be done.
The UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus had closed the crossing point in December 2005 for a period of approximately six weeks to undergo ''necessary roadwork and infrastructural improvements as required under EU transportation standards.''
The road works were facilitated by UNFICYP, funded by the EU and supervised by UNDP/PFF.
