AKEL and DISY remain strongest political parties

Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) ? With left-wing AKEL remaining the first political force on the island with 31.16%, opposition Democratic Rally following second with 30.33% and the Democratic Party and Social Democrats increasing their percentages, the electoral process for the new 56-seat House of Representatives ended here Monday.

The percentages of the two large parties, AKEL and DISY went down by around 3% for each party.

From a total of 501,024 registered voters at 1,248 polling stations, a total of 55.035 or 10,98% people abstained and 445,989 or 89.02% voted. There were 14,737 or 3.30% invalid votes, 10,104 or 2. 27% were blank and a total of 421.148 were valid, a percentage of 94.43%.

AKEL received 131,237 votes, a percentage of 31.16%, marking a 3.55% decrease since the 2001 parliamentary elections, while the Democratic Rally garnered 127,734 votes, a percentage of 30.33% and a 3.67% drop.

The Democratic Party received 75,429 votes or 17.91% with an increase of 3.07% while EDEK got 37,531 votes or 8,91% marking a rise 2.40% rise.

The European Party secured 24,152 or 5.73% and a percentage of 0.58%, the Ecologists 8,192 votes or 1,95% and a drop of 0.03%, and the United Democrats received 6,563 votes or 1.56% and a 1.03% drop.

The Free Citizens Movement received 5,155 votes or 1,22%, a percentage of 1.22% and the European Democracy scored 1,861 votes or 0.44% and a 0.44%, percentage, while the Political Movement of Hunters received 1.111 ψήφους or 0.26% and a percentage of 0.26%. The Popular Socialist Movement (LASOK) 0.23% did not secure a seat. Independent candidates received between 0.11% and 0.01%.
