Russian envoy says UN role on Cyprus should be strengthened
Nicosia, May 24 - Russian Foreign Ministry's Special Representative for Cyprus Leonid Abramov has said the UN role in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem should be further strengthened within the framework of the UN Security Council five permanent members.
He also stressed that his country has not changed and will not change its principled position on Cyprus.
Mr. Abramov, who is visiting Cyprus, was received today by House President Demetris Christofias, with whom he discussed the present phase of the Cyprus problem.
According to a House of Representatives press release, Mr. Christofias expressed the Cypriot people's appreciation for the consistent position of principles, which the friendly country of Russia maintains on the Cyprus problem.
Mr. Abramov, the release said, assured Mr. Christofias that the Russian Federation has not changed and will not change its policy on Cyprus, because it is always based on principles.
The Russian Federation, he added, supports that the UN role on Cyprus should be a primary one and should be further strengthened within the framework of the Security Council five permanent members.
