EU Environment Commissioner impressed by work in Cyprus
Nicosia May 26 - EU Commissioner for the Environment Stavros Dimas said he was impressed by the work done by the Cypriot authorities for the creation of an environmental consciousness as well as by the fact that all Cypriot political parties rank environmental issues high on their agenda.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Dimas also said that he is impressed by Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos' knowledge on the environment and his concern in promoting environmental issues.
Mr. Dimas added that Cyprus has incorporated the biggest part of the EU legislation regarding the environment in its national legislation, adding that he found understanding from Cyprus' Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment in dealing with some issues.
''We agreed on common dealing with these issues and to exploit the financing opportunities from the various structural funds and other financing means, provided by the EU,'' he said, adding that ''the implementation of the EU law for the environment is of paramount importance.''
He added that his visit's agenda included the management and prevention of solid and liquid waste, as well as waste recycling, composting and disposal.
The EU Environment Commissioner said that Cyprus has received a warning by the Commission regarding the implementation of EU directive on Ecosystems.
