Cyprus condemns Russian diplomats? assassination in Iraq

Nicosia, Jun 28 - The Cyprus Foreign Ministry condemned the assassination of Russian diplomats in Iraq, describing the act as a serious blow against humanity and the interests of the Iraqi people.

''The Cypriot society was shocked by the news of the violent abduction and assassination of Russian diplomats by extremists in Iraq'', an official press release said.

The Republic of Cyprus reiterates that it is against any form of terrorism, irrespective of its motives, and urges both the Iraqi government and the multinational force in Iraq to take measures to end violence and restore peace in the country.

It also expresses the wholehearted support of the Republic of Cyprus in the effort of the international community to normalize the situation in Iraq and for the peaceful reconstruction of the country.

''The Foreign Ministry, expressing the feelings of abhorrence of the Government and the people of Cyprus as a whole, condemns this heinous crime that has not only caused the lives of innocent Russian civilians but is also against the effort of the international community to achieve peace in Iraq'', the press release also said.

The government and the people of Cyprus have already expressed their deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the government of the Russian Federation as well as the relatives of the victims with a letter of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to his Russian counterpart.
