Names of those killed in military helicopter crash announced
Nicosia, Jul 5 (CNA) -- Cypriot Flight Lieutenant Andreas Papasozomenos and Russian Group Captain Oleynik Yuri are the two crew members of the Cyprus National Guard MI 35 helicopter who died when their helicopter crashed today during a training exercise, in the west of the island.
Ministry of Defence Spokesman Major Nicolaos Tiropanis announced that a three-day mourning will be observed, until Friday July 7, in all National Guard camps, units and services.
He said that during the mourning period flags will fly at half-mast in all National Guard camps, units and other services, and all scheduled celebrations are cancelled.
Tiropanis also expressed the deep sorrow and sympathy of the staff of the Ministry and the National Guard General Command to the families of the two men killed while on duty.
Coroner Eleni Antoniou said that the body of the Cypriot Flight Lieutenant was found charred and with many fractures, while that of the Russian Group Captain was dismembered.
A post mortem will be conducted at Paphos General Hospital.
