US welcomes agreement formula reached in Cyprus
Nicosia, Jul 10 -- The US embassy in Nicosia has welcomed the agreement reached on Saturday by Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat in the presence of UN Undersecretary General for political affairs Ibrahim Gambari, expressing hope that ''the agreed formula will set the stage for comprehensive negotiations on the Cyprus issue.''
President Papadopoulos and Mr. Talat have agreed to ''begin a process immediately, involving bi-communal discussion of issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both of which will contribute to a comprehensive settlement.''
''This is a positive development to move forward to solve the Cyprus issue,'' a press release issued by the US embassy says, adding that it looks forward ''to the start of talks at the end of the month, as agreed by the leaders, on both every day and substantive issues, and confidence building measures.''
''As always, we stand ready to assist the UN and the two sides in this important effort,'' the release concludes.
