US State Department thanks Cyprus for evacuating citizens from Lebanon
Nicosia, Jul 25 -- The US have expressed their gratitude towards the
Republic of Cyprus for the assistance it offers in evacuating people from
war ? ravaged Lebanon.
?The US government very much appreciates the support and help it has received from the government of Cyprus in helping us get our people back home out of Lebanon. I know the government of Cyprus has made similar efforts on behalf of many other countries. It?s something we very much appreciate?, said Monday State Department Deputy Spokesman Tom Casey.
?The Secretary of State (Condoleezza Rice) spoke with her counterpart there (Cypriot FM George Lillikas) while she was transiting en route to Lebanon, and again conveyed her personal thanks as well as those of the United States government for their efforts?, he added.
Asked whether the enhanced US - Cyprus cooperation could help persuade the State Department to name a new Cyprus coordinator and play a more serious role in resolving the longstanding Cyprus dispute, he said:
?We very much support a resolution of the issues involving Cyprus. We will continue to do so and we'll continue to use all appropriate diplomatic means to help support that process?.
Answering a question whether the US reliance on Cyprus to assist in evacuating thousands of Americans from Lebanon could help improve the relations between both countries so that soon Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos is received in Washington for personal thanks from the US government, Mr. Casey remitted the issue to the White House.
