Government condemns coup against Makarios
Nicosia, Jul 15 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government today condemned the coup
d' etat of July 15, 1974 against the democratically elected President,
Archbishop Makarios, stressing the need "to construct the necessary unity on
the home front, to strengthen democracy and democratic institutions, and to
remain focused on the principles of legality".
Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said "the government deplores the coup, which opened the doors and gave the opportunity and the excuse to Turkey to invade Cyprus". |
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
The Cypriot official added that "the Cyprus people still experience the consequences of this occupation and struggle to reverse them and liberate this land".
Replying to questions, Papapetrou said that as far as the Cyprus problem and the island' EU accession course are concerned, political powers on the island "must move in the same direction to avoid unnecessary conflicts".
