Memorials held for Archbishop Makarios III
Nicosia, Jul 30 -- Memorial services were held in all churches across the government controlled areas of the Republic for Cyprus' first President, Archbishop Makarios III, who died on August 3, 1977.
The official memorial was held at Kykkos Monastery, in the presence of President Tassos Papadopoulos and other officials.
Speaking at the memorial, Honourary President of the Social Democrats Movement EDEK Vassos Lyssarides referred to the struggles of Makarios III until the end of his life for Cyprus and its future, as well as current efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.
He pointed out the need for a solution of the Cyprus problem based on international and European law, and deplored international efforts to undermine the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus with the simultaneous upgrading of the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic.
Referring to Turkey's EU course, Mr. Lyssarides pointed out that Ankara is refusing to meet its obligations as a candidate country.
After the memorial, a sanctum was held at the tomb of Makarios III at Throni, followed by the laying of wreaths.
