Cyprus and China sign economic cooperation agreement

Nicosia, Aug 30 -- Cyprus Minister of Finance Michalis Sarris and Chinese Assistant Minister of Commerce Chen Jian have signed in Nicosia a new Agreement of Economic Cooperation between their two countries, expressing certainty that the excellent relations of cooperation, the exchanges and mutual investment would continue and be further upgraded.

''We look forward to this agreement providing further impetus to stronger economic ties between our respective private sectors to pursue trade investment relations and joint ventures in both Cyprus and China, but also in other neighboring countries,'' Mr. Sarris said.

Mr. Chen, who also invited Mr. Sarris to visit China, referred to the economic and trade relations between China and Cyprus saying that they ''have been progressing very drastically and very strongly in recent years.''

He added that ''the Chinese government has always remained committed to developing trade relationships with Cyprus.''

''We agreed that the two sides will continue to make efforts to enhance our commercial relations and increase trade,'' Mr. Chen also said, noting that ''China imports new products from Cyprus and especially red wine.''

?The two sides also agreed to increase two-way investment and improve cooperation in the services and trade sectors, and we have also come to realize that there is very good potential for development and cooperation in the area of tourism'' , he added.

In his statements Mr. Sarris began by saying ''how happy we are to signing today one important protocol and one important agreement with the great nation of China with which we already have very good economic relations and with which also we have relations of a very friendly nature.''

''We would like to thank especially his Excellency Minister Chen for his personal involvement and interest in the preparation and conclusion of this agreement and to say how much the President of the Republic looks forward to his visit in December 2006 to China, which will be a further step in strengthening relations between our two countries,'' he added.
