Cyprus President steps down from his Party?s leadership
Nicosia, Aug 30 - The departure of President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos from the presidency of the Democratic Party (DIKO) does not mean that he is withdrawing from active political life, according to the island's official spokesman.
Asked why President Papadopoulos has left the presidency of DIKO, Mr. Pashiardis said ''it is a decision of the President of the Republic and I do not think that he has taken anyone by surprise.''
''It has been a while that his decision to depart from the presidency of DIKO had been made public. Let us acknowledge him the right to decide by himself the date of communicating this decision,'' he added.
Asked if one could assume that by departing from the presidency of DIKO President Papadopoulos intended to withdraw from politics, Mr. Pashiardis said ''his resignation from the presidency of DIKO does not mean in any way departure from active politics.''
Mr. Papadopoulos resigned his post as leader of the ruling DIKO party at Tuesday?s meeting of the party Executive Bureau.
