Cyprus donates US$ 100,000 to Lebanon
Nicosia, Oct 10 ? Cyprus has donated US$ 100,000 to Lebanon to help tackle the destruction and meet the humanitarian needs that have emerged from the recent war in Lebanon.
A check for this amount was handed over during a special ceremony on Tuesday by Foreign Ministry Acting Permanent Secretary Alexandros Zenon to the Ambassador of Lebanon to Cyprus Michel El Khoury, who thanked Cyprus and its people for all they have done for Lebanon.
Mr. Zenon said this donation constitutes a contribution for the relief of the Lebanese people, recalling that from the very first moment Cyprus had taken the decision to contribute financially to Lebanon's needs following the events in July and August.
He also said that Cyprus has given and continues to give help for the repatriation of all foreign citizens who fled the warring region, for the dispatch of humanitarian aid and the set up and transfer of the peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
He noted that Cyprus has had a similar experience of war when Turkish troops invaded the country in 1974, adding that this is why Cypriots can understand better how the Lebanese people feel.
The Lebanese Ambassador extended his thanks and gratitude to Zenon, to the Cypriot government and people for all they have done for Lebanon in this difficult situation.
?It was somehow for me a chance even in the most difficult times and sad times to witness personally the kindness and the warmth of the Cypriot people,? he added.
He noted that the cheque will be forwarded to the High Commission of Relief in Beirut to relieve people in need.
Mr. El Khoury expressed hope that there will be peace in the whole area for the benefit of Cyprus, Lebanon, Europe and the whole world.
