Cyprus condemns assassination of Lebanese Minister
Nicosia, Nov 22 - The Cyprus Government has strongly condemned the assassination of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel.
An official press release said the ''the heinous murder was an attack against democracy and stability in Lebanon, with the aim to undermine the already fragile political situation in the neighbouring country''.
''The Government of the Republic of Cyprus appeals to the people of Lebanon, of all religious convictions and political affiliations, to stand united in these critical moments'', he added.
It also notes that ''the Government of the Republic of Cyprus reiterates its unequivocal support to the legitimate and democratically elected Lebanese Government''.
Moreover, Cyprus Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis expressed the hope that this criminal action will not affect the efforts for the consolidation of peace and stability in the neighbouring country.
Mr. Pashiardis also said that President Tassos Papadopoulos had a telephone conversation with Lebanese Prime Minister to whom he conveyed the condolences of the government and the people of Cyprus for the assassination of the Lebanese Minister.
