New Yearís Day in Cyprus is known as Saint Basilís day and it is a day for optimism and hope for a fruitful forthcoming year.

A special cake - Vasilopita Ė is baked by each family, and, when it is cut, the person who finds a coin in his or her slice is promised luck for the forthcoming year.

In fact, whatever time of the year one visits Cyprus there is bound to be some seasonal or religious festival taking place.
