USA: Cyprus and Greco-Turkish relations high priority
By Demetris Apokis--
Washington, Jul 24 (CNA) -- US Ambassador to Greece Tomas Miller has
said the Cyprus problem and Greco-Turkish relations are high priority issues
for the US government.
Speaking here yesterday at the American Hellenic Institute Miller noted that Cyprus' accession to the European Union is a decision to be taken by the Union itself. He reiterated, however, that Washington, which had played a vital role in Cyprus' course towards the EU, continues to support its accession.|
The US diplomat stressed that the US work hard to contribute to a settlement of the Cyprus problem prior to the country's accession to the EU.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
