World-acclaimed tennis player, Markos Baghdatis, was elected Cyprus’ best male athlete of 2006. Born in the coastal city of Limassol in 1985, Baghdatis is currently the Number 11 ranked player in the world.

He began playing tennis at age five with his father and brothers. He enjoys playing and watching football, and is a supporter of Apollon Limassol in Cyprus.

Baghdatis trained at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Paris on an Olympic Solidarity Youth Development Program Scholarship since the age of 13. His fans chant "Marco ise trella, me tin aspri tin fanella!" (Marcos, you are a craze, in the white shirt) in Greek to cheer him on.
