US House subcommittee approves resolution on Cyprus
Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) - The Subcommittee for Europe of the US House
International Relations Committee has approved a resolution, which
"expresses the sense of Congress that security, reconciliation and prosperity
for all Cypriots can be best achieved within the context of membership of the
According to an American Hellenic Institute (AHI) press release, the resolution adds that "EU membership will provide significant rights and obligations for all Cypriots and for other purposes".
AHI Executive Director, Nick Larigakis, described the resolution as "a major victory", adding that "the fight will proceed to the full House International Relations Committee".|
The resolution is also described as a "significant step" towards reaffirming US support for Cyprus' accession to the EU with or without a prior solution to the island's political problem.
Cyprus, which opened accession negotiations with the EU in 1998, has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
