Nicosia ready to offer assistance to Middle-East problem
Nicosia, Jan 17 – Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias said the Republic can be a bridge of dialogue and cooperation between Europe and the Middle East, as it has done in the past, as well as most recently, during the crisis in Lebanon.
Addressing the visiting President of the People's Assembly of the Syrian Arab Republic, Mahmoud Al Abrash, Mr. Christofias also said that ''we are always ready to offer any possible help towards a viable solution to the Middle East problem.''
As regards the Cyprus problem, the House President said that the Greek-Cypriot side will continue efforts for a functional and viable solution within the framework of relevant United Nations resolutions.
''We will continue the effort to bring together the two communities. Surely, we are not against the opening of the Turkish-Cypriot community to the outside world, something which our Turkish Cypriot compatriots have been deprived as a result of the continuous Turkish occupation'', he added.
“Solidarity is needed between friendly nations, such as Syria and Cyprus, which are joined together by common historical experiences,” he also stressed.
