New UN Chief calls for implementation of July 8 agreement
Brussels, Jan 24 – Newly-appointed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has encouraged the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to implement a process they agreed to in regard to bicommunal discussions.
At a press conference following a meeting with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, the UN SG also said:
“Now, last year, the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Mr. [Ibrahim] Gambari, had a meeting with the leaders of the two sides, Greek and Turkish Cypriots, and there was an agreement between the two leaders. It is important that the two leaders and the two [communities] should implement this agreement which was agreed last year. I will ensure to encourage them as well as to ensure the implementation of this agreement, which has been agreed between the leaders. It is very important to implement what has been agreed.”
Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Talat agreed on July 8th 2006 to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day to day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.
