Cypriot EU Commissioner in US for official visit
Brussels, Feb 28 - European Commissioner for Health Markos Kyprianou is in the United States until Tuesday, March 6, to discuss regulatory cooperation, new technologies, nutrition labeling, pandemic preparedness and smoking prevention. His meetings also include one with Secretary of Health, Michael Leavitt.
The Cypriot Commissioner began his program today in Washington, D.C., with a meeting with Mr. Andrew C. von Eschenbach, Commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration. They will also focus on the rising obesity problem, worldwide.
Mr. Kyprianou will also discuss animal health issues and regulatory cooperation between the EU and the US with the Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns and plans to meet members of the European-American Council with whom he will discuss food issues and innovation and new technologies in pharmaceuticals. He is scheduled to address the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), too.
In New York, Commissioner Kyprianou will meet Mr. Thomas R. Frieden, the city's Health Commissioner, as well as Ambassador Susan C. Schwab, the United States Trade Representative.
Food safety will be discussed during Mr. Kyprianou's meeting with Senator Richard J. Durbin, the Senate's Majority Whip.
On Tuesday, Commissioner Kyprianou will meet Secretary of Health Michael Leavitt. Their discussions are expected to cover issues relating to tobacco, alcohol, HIV/AIDS and pandemic preparedness.
