Cyprus mourns death of Defense Minister
Nicosia, May 3 – Cyprus mourns the death of Defense Minister Nikos Symeonides who passed away early today at the age of 68.
Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos expressed his deep sorrow and paid tribute to the vision the late minister had for the island’s defenses. He said in a written statement: “I express my deep sorrow for the death of Defense Minister Nikos Symeonides. I have been following with great anxiety the difficult times he was facing in the past few months, and was being kept informed about his health.”
Mr. Papadopoulos also notes that Mr. Symeonides worked with vision for the island’s defenses and made every effort to strengthen them and apply important administrative changes in the National Guard, the reservists and the Ministry he headed.
Minister of Finance Michalis Sarris will take over the duties of the Minister of Defense, as Acting Minister of Defense, until a new Minister is appointed.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2007 in Nicosia.
