Archbishop Demetrios of America on official visit to Cyprus
Nicosia, July 5 – Archbishop Demetrios of America met on Wednesday with President of Cyprus' House of Representatives Demetris Christofias, reiterating that the substance of the Cyprus problem is the continuing Turkish occupation of the island's northern third.
On attempts to lift the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, Mr. Christofias said measures that would lead to the upgrading of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus and the downgrading of the Republic of Cyprus could not be accepted.
Archbishop Demetrios informed Mr. Christofias on the efforts of the Church and of Cypriots in the United States to support the struggle of Cyprus for a just and viable solution.
Referring to the Cyprus problem, he said there has been a small improvement and assured that ''we will strive in every way and with every peaceful means for a just solution of the Cyprus problem.''
Earlier today, Archbishop Demetrios also addressed the opening of a two-week seminar for teachers of Greco-American schools organized by the University of Cyprus, which will deal with Greek as a second language for English speaking students.
