Cypriot elected World Federation of UNESCO Associations President

Nicosia, Jul 13 – George Christofides, President of Cyprus Associations and Clubs of UNESCO, has been elected President of the World Federation of UNESCO Associations and Clubs for the next four years.

The election took place during the World Congress of UNESCO Associations and Clubs held on 11-12 July in Athens.

The World Federation of UNESCO Associations and Clubs is made up of 4,000 associations and clubs members worldwide.

A total of 192 member-states of the United Nations are represented in UNESCO, the UN special agency dealing with issues such as education, science and culture.

Under his new capacity, Mr. Christofides will attend the UNESCO World Board meeting to be held this September and the UNESCO General Conference to be held this October in Paris, the UNESCO seat.

The World Council of UNESCO Associations and Clubs consists of the President, five Vice-Presidents: Greece for Europe, China for Asia-Pacific, Tunisia for Arab States, Jamaica for Latin America-Caribbean, and Cameroon for Africa, five members: Burkina Faso for Africa, Venezuela for Latin America-Caribbean, Morocco for Arab States, India for Asia-Pacific and Romania for Europe, and three ex officio members: Japan, France, Italy.
