Russian official says Cyprus settlement would contribute to stability
The Chairman of the Federal Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Mr. Sergey Mironov states in a letter to Cypriot House of Representatives President Mr. Demetris Christofias, that the solution of the Cyprus problem, which will take into consideration the interests of all Cypriots, will contribute to the level of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
According to a House of Representatives press release, in Mr. Mironov’s letter, it is noted that “the Federal Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation is closely following the situation regarding the Cyprus problem.” He adds that the Russian Federation's support to the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of the Republic of Cyprus is well known. Specifically he says that “We are convinced that a just and comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem can only be achieved on the basis of the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions and the faithful implementation of the generally accepted rules and principles of international law.”
Mr. Mironov, who supports the strengthening of the traditionally close ties between Russia and Cyprus, and the continuous development of relations between the two parliaments, points out that Russia believes that “a political settlement on the island, which will take into consideration the interests of all Cypriots, will contribute to increasing the level of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
