Kasoulides - Christofias go through to final election round

Nicosia, Feb 17 – Former Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and House Speaker and AKEL Secretary General, Demetris Christofias progressed to the second round of presidential elections this past Sunday, while incumbent President Tassos Papadopoulos came in third place.

Mr. Kasoulides ranked first with 33.51%, followed by Mr. Christofias with 33.29% and Mr. Papadopoulos third with 31.79%.

Since none of the two leading candidates secured more than 50% of the vote, Mr. Kasoulides and Mr. Christofias will compete in the run-off election this coming Sunday, in which the candidate with the largest number of votes will be declared President of the Republic.

Turnout in last Sunday’s elections reached 89.42% with Cyprus Interior Minister expressing satisfaction with ''the impeccable elections.''
