New Cypriot EU Commissioner Assumes Duties
Nicosia, Mar 3 - New Cypriot EU Commissioner Ms. Androulla Vassiliou assumed her duties as Commissioner for Health, after the approval of her appointment by the members of the Council of the EU and the President of the European Commission Mr. Jose Manuel Barosso.
Ms. Vassiliou stated that it is very important for Cyprus to be represented effectively in the EU and develop an important role, despite its size. She also said that she would make every effort in order to respond to the role and the duties she has been assigned, ''so that Cyprus will be able to play an important role within the EU.''
Furthermore, Cyprus’ new Commissioner pointed out the importance of public health issues and noted that she has been invited to be the key speaker during a conference on cancer organized by the EU Slovenian President at the beginning of April.
Her appointment is expected to be approved by the European Parliament within the next three weeks.
