Peruvian Naval Rear Admiral Appointed UNFICYP Commander
New York, Apr 2 - Peruvian Naval Rear Admiral Mario Sanchez has been appointed as commander of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), to replace Division Gen. Rafael Barni.
According to the Peruvian Ministry of Defense, Mario Sanchez assumed the post on March 30.
Expressing his satisfaction with the appointment, Peruvian Minister of Defense Antero Flores-Araoz said it was accomplished by UN consensus ''after a strict international selection process that included high level candidates from other countries.''
The UN's mission in Cyprus, which has been stationed since 1964, comprises soldiers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Austria, Canada, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary and Britain.
