Commissioner Iacovou: Pivotal Work Done at Bicommunal Teams of Experts
Nicosia, May 6 - Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar, Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and adviser of the Turkish Cypriot Leader Ozdil Nami met on Tuesday, to make an evaluation of the progress of the technical committees and working groups and exchanged views about how the procedure can yield the best results.
Some problems were noted and they discussed ways on how they can be overcome, Mr. Iacovou said. The Presidential Commissioner added that, “Generally speaking, working groups and technical committees are doing pivotal work, but this does not mean that there is an agreement,”, pointing out that the aim of the committees and the groups is not to negotiate but to exchange views over a wide range of subjects.
He declined to comment on progress in the discussions of the groups and the committees, saying there is confidentiality about the details of their work. “What I can say is that in the committees there is a good climate. I think we have a lot of time ahead of us,” he noted.
In March 2008, President Christofias and Mr. Talat, during a meeting in the presence of the UN, agreed to set up working groups and technical committees to deal with various aspects of the Cyprus problem with a view to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations between the two leaders.
