Cyprus University of Technology to Establish New Academic Department
Nicosia, May 9 - In 2009 the Cyprus University of Technology will open a new department for undergraduate studies in the fields of commerce, shipping and finance.
The new department will welcome its first 40 students in September 2009. The Cyprus University of Technology intends to offer postgraduate studies in shipping and finance in the future.
Addressing the international science and research workshop “Finance and Development 2008” that takes place in Limassol, Chairman of the University’s Interim Governing Board, Professor Antonis Constantinides, said that the Department for Commercial, Financial and Shipping studies aims to connect academic research with the shipping sector.
The shipping sector, he said, is a very important sector for the economy of Limassol, where the Cyprus University of Technology is situated, adding that many world shipping companies are based in Limassol, the second largest city of Cyprus.
The workshop “Finance and Development 2008” is attended by fifteen professors of European universities, among them the University of Cambridge, the University of London, the Leicester University and the University of Amsterdam.
The workshop is also attended by representatives of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Cyprus Shipping Council, the Cyprus Stock Exchange, the Cyprus Federation of Employers and Industrialists, commercial banks and government services.
