Cyprus to Host International Meeting for Peace
Nicosia, Nov 6 – Cyprus will host the International Meeting for Peace entitled, “The Civilization of Peace: Faiths and Cultures in Dialogue” which will take place November 16th-18th.
The meeting will be attended by religious leaders, heads of state and representatives of different cultures as well as intellectuals, secular believers, and journalists from the international media. It is being organized by the Community of Sant’ Egidio in cooperation with the Church of Cyprus.
Speaking during a press conference here today, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee Yiannos Harilaou said that the meeting will be attended by the President of Cyprus, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, the President Montenegro, the President of Malta, the President of Albania, and the President of Bosnia Herzegovina.
Referring to the program of the meeting, the Chairman said that the opening assembly will take place on Sunday November 16th. Panels will take place on Monday and Tuesday while on Tuesday a prayer for peace will take place at the Archbishopric yard in Nicosia. This will be followed by prayers in different locations according to religious tradition.
Speaking during the press conference, Archbishop Chrysostomos II said that every year the Community of Sant’ Egidio organizes a Meeting for Peace, involving all religions “because they believe that all religions play a positive role in regard to peace.”
He noted that heads of state, government officials, and primates of churches and religions are invited to these meetings “to play a positive role for the peace of the world.”
He said that “our effort is to send messages from this meeting to the world for peace in Cyprus and the rest of the world.”
He said that the Meeting for Peace will stress that peace in Cyprus will have to serve all the people of Cyprus – Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and the other minorities on he island.
