Nicosia, Dec 19 – A bicommunal event, under the title “Circle of Love”, dedicated to children with special needs, will take place in Nicosia on January 9, 2009, under the auspices of the first lady of Cyprus Elsi Christofia and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat’s spouse Oyia.

The aim of the event is to raise funds for institutions that care for children with special needs in both communities in Cyprus.

The two ladies, Mrs. Christofias and Mrs. Talat, gave Friday a joint press conference at Ledra Palace, during which they spoke about the event and the goals set. During the press conference a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot student read the joint communiqué, issued for the event, in Greek and in Turkish, respectively.

As the joint communiqué said during the event, 10-15 year old Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot pupils will form a big circle around the old town of Nicosia, which will be illuminated with the lanterns the students will hold.

The circle will close at the Ledra Palace where groups from both communities will perform dance and song routines. The participation of each student is voluntary and will contribute to fund-raising.

“We extend a special message of love and solidarity with the children with special needs. Children who have a lot of strength and who struggle daily for a decent life, education and entertainment. We thank the humanitarian institutions and the voluntary organizations who undertook to organize the event and the participation of the pupils,” the communiqué noted and called on pupils, teachers and parents and all volunteers to make this event a feast of love.

In her statement, Mrs. Christofias said that when she meets with Mrs. Talat and they talk about Cyprus they always have children on their mind and especially those who face difficulties.

“It is those children that we are concerned, care and love,” she added, and thanked Mrs. Talat and the representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community, expressing certainty that this event will be an unforgettable experience for everyone.

Mrs. Christofias also noted that their husbands President Demetris Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat have endorsed and embraced this effort with love. She added that similar actions will also take place.
