Spokesman: Basis of a Settlement Already Agreed
Nicosia, Mar 18 - The basis of a political settlement in Cyprus has been agreed and is defined in joint statements, issued by the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot community leaders, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou stressed in Nicosia today.
Commenting on remarks by the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat at yesterday's signing ceremony of the Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry, Mr. Stephanou said “it is of no importance what each side says and presents at the negotiating table.”
“The criterion and the measure by which we evaluate what each side puts forward at the negotiations is the agreed basis of a settlement”, he said, adding that “the target is the reunification of Cyprus through a solution”.
The Spokesman also said that “the Greek Cypriot negotiator, representing the Greek Cypriot community, goes to the negotiations with very concrete positions which serve everything that has been agreed”.
“At times, various things are said by the other side which are not in line with the agreed basis nor do they serve what we have agreed as the basis of a settlement,” he added.
Replying to a question about Mr. Talat's reference to political equality, Mr. Stephanou said “political equality is defined by UN resolutions and it certainly does not mean numerical equality.”
