USA supports UN chief's good offices mission on Cyprus

Washington, Sep 10 (CNA) -- The United States strogly supports
the UN Secretary General's Good Offices Mission on Cyprus.
This was stated by a State Department spokesman when asked to comment on the 6 September meeting in Paris of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.
"The United States strongly supports the UN Secretary General's Good Offices Mission on Cyprus. We endorse the Secretary General's request that the two leaders return to the island with a sense of urgency to work with his Special Advisor to achieve requisite progress before he meets with them again the first week of October in New York," the State Department spokesamn said.
| Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
