President of the Republic of Cyprus sends condolences on the passing away of Senator Edward Kennedy
The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Demetris Christofias has sent a letter of condolence to Vice President of the United States Joseph R. Biden, following the passing away of Senator Edward Kennedy. President Christofias also sent messages of condolences to Victoria Reggie Kennedy and Representative Patrick Kennedy.
According to an official announcement, in his letter to Vice President Biden, President Christofias stressed that Senator Kennedy was a great defender of freedom and human rights. Moreover, President Christofias noted that Senator Kennedy was a firm supporter for a just solution to the Cyprus problem.
In his letter to Vice President Biden, President Christofias emphasized that “Senator Kennedy was also a genuine friend of Cyprus and since the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus in 1974 he was, together with you, (Vice President Biden), one of the most firm supporters of our just struggle for the achievement of an overall solution of the Cyprus problem, based on the rule of law and the respect of human rights.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Markos Kyprianou, in his condolence letters to the family, expressed deep regret over the death of Senator Edward Kennedy. In his message, the Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude for the late Senator’s struggle for Cyprus’ cause, as well as his long standing support for the restoration of the human rights of all Cypriots and the reunification of the island.
