AMBASSADOR'S MESSAGE ON 9/11 ANNIVERSARY
2002-09-10 22:24:39

MESSAGE BY THE AMBASSADOR OF CYPRUS TO THE US,
ERATO KOZAKOU-MARCOULLIS,
ON THE OCCASION OF THE TRAGIC ANNIVERSARY OF THE TERRORIST ATTACKS AGAINST THE UNITED STATES

September 11th inflicted a deep wound not only on the very psyche of the American people, but also on humankind itself, bringing pain and anger to millions of people, irrespective of citizenship, nationality, race or color. These horrific crimes may have been committed in New York and the US capital, but the target was the entire civilized world, democracy and freedom, and among the thousands of innocent victims, several hundred were from more than 90 different countries.

This is why the international response was immediate and why solidarity with the American people and with the efforts of the US government to fight and eliminate terrorism was massive on the part of the international community.

The government and the people of Cyprus instantly expressed their condolences and their wholehearted sympathy to the government of the United States and to the families of the victims of the terrorist attacks. At the same time, Cyprus joined unreservedly the international coalition against terrorism and cooperated and continues to cooperate in efforts to combat the financing of terrorism, as well as efforts to eliminate the very phenomenon of terrorism in all its forms and wherever it occurs.

This struggle will certainly be a long one, but international determination to eliminate terrorism remains steadfast because of the conviction that hate, fanaticism and intolerance should not be allowed to prevail over values and principles on which the entire fabric of the civilized world has rested for centuries.
