Nicosia, Jan 21— Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis has advanced to the third round of the Australian Open. Baghdatis, who won the ATP Tournament Medibank International in Sydney, after defeating French Richard Gasquet, improved his position in the 2010 ATP Rankings and he now ranks 31st with 1,215 points.
Baghdatis eased through the Australian Open's first round after defeating Italy’s Paolo Loreznzi, 83 in the ATP rankings, in a 3-0 (6-2, 6-4, 6-4) victory. In his second match, Baghdatis fought back from two sets down to advance to the third round after beating Spanish David Ferrer, the number 18 seed, in a match which lasted more than four hours. The sets were 4-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 and 6-1. The Cypriot tennis champion will face Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the third round, on Saturday, January 23.
In 2006, Marcos reached the Australian Open final where he was defeated by the World's No 1 tennis player Roger Federer.
