Cypriots protest over blast tragedy for fourth day in a row
People continued to gather outside the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, on Thursday, July 14, for a fourth consecutive day to express their grief and voice their anger over the circumstances which led to the deadly blast at the naval base “Evangelos Florakis” on Monday.
People from all age groups assembled in front of the Presidential Palace in order to condemn the government’s handling of the incident with many protesters demanding that president Christofias apologizes to the people and the victims' families for the tragedy.
The representative of the families of the “Helios” airplane crash victims also attended the event and expressed his sympathy to the victims' families amid a protracted ovation from the crowd.
Protesters said the meeting would take place again on Friday night and ended the event peacefully. Organizers read out the names of all the blast victims and held a minute’s silence to their memory.
At the site of the blast, people from nearby communities gathered at Governor’s Beach, in Zygi, and marched towards the naval base “Evangelos Florakis” holding candles, flowers and banners.
People were asking for the punishment of those responsible for the incident. The event was peaceful and it was attended by people of various age groups, as well as British expats, who took part to express their condolences to the families of the victims.
