Commissioner Hahn and Minister of the Interior visit solid waste management plant
Cypriot Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis and EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn visited the Larnaca-Famagusta solid waste management plant, which has been co-funded by the EU and the Republic of Cyprus. Commissioner Hahn was briefed on the operation of the plant and future plants to use waste to produce energy.
Mr. Sylikiotis said the plant was the first of its kind in Cyprus adding that he briefed Commissioner Hahn on Cyprus` strategy for household solid waste management aiming at the completion of the other plants in Nicosia and Limassol and at the production of compost which will be used to produce energy.
Commissioner Hahn commented that "there is certainly a concept regarding the waste treatment in Cyprus and I think the next important step is first to have an idea how the next financial period the money could be spent. I have to say that during this period particular the environmental budget is very well used and spent here in Cyprus above the European average."
He also noted that it is important to use the waste for the production of electricity.
